Individual Counseling in Roanoke, VA and Online

If you’re struggling with low self-esteem, perfectionism, and people pleasing tendencies, individual therapy can be a valuable tool to help you begin to value yourself and your needs.

You don’t have to keep doing everything yourself. It’s time for you to have a space where you can express yourself fully without holding back. You deserve to have the support you so readily give to everyone else. It’s time to put your mental health and wellness first.

Whether you come from a family rife with toxic relationships, or you’re navigating the stressful demands of child rearing or assisting aging parents, or you simply want to explore the various parts of yourself and go on a journey toward self-actualization, individual therapy can help.

I offer a calm, engaged, and accepting space where you can feel listened to and cared for. I’ve been a licensed clinical psychologist for over 20 years. I bring a patient, warm and kind presence to our sessions so you can express yourself fully without feeling judged or shamed.

What is individual therapy?

If you’ve sought individual therapy before, you probably know how powerful it can be. But if you haven’t, you may be a bit wary of the process.

I offer in-person individual counseling in Roanoke, VA and also online. Through PSYPACT, I am able to legally and ethically practice in numerous states outside of Virginia, where I am primarily licensed, via telehealth. To learn more about the PSYPACT agreement and whether your state qualifies for online therapy, please click here.

Whether you choose to do in-person or online sessions is a personal preference. According to research, they are equally beneficial and one has not been shown to be more effective than the other.

Individual therapy sessions can be used to:

  • Navigate stressful life transitions such as becoming a parent, moving in/getting married, getting divorced, empty nesting, aging parents, a new job, blending families, or grieving the loss of a loved one
  • Establish work-life balance
  • Learn to manage overwhelm and set boundaries to prioritize your well-being
  • Establish a self-care routine
  • Find happiness in your everyday life
  • Determine what your values and goals are
  • Develop healthy self-esteem and self-worth
  • Embrace self-compassion and self-acceptance
  • Get yourself “unstuck”
  • Explore toxic family dynamics and behaviors learned in childhood
  • Process traumatic and difficult experiences

I specialize in three areas of individual therapy:

Parts Work

Whether you’re struggling with connection, a toxic work environment, or simply feel you need to get to know yourself better and honor your own needs, individual therapy is a useful tool.

I am an Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist, which means I operate from the understanding that we all have different “parts” of the self which are sometimes in conflict with one another. Together, we can discover why certain parts of you feel this way while other parts of you feel that way. And then we work together to heal them so you become integrated and feel whole.

When you become aware and accepting of all of you, not just the shiny, “attractive” parts, you begin to heal.

Recovery From Eating Disorders

I have worked with adults challenged by eating disorders since 1995.

If you’re living with disordered eating, you know how complex the relationship is between wanting to feel better and fearing change. You live daily with the struggle that impacts your emotional and physical health. These challenges strain personal relationships, creating conflicts, hurt feelings, and misunderstandings.

I’m committed to providing the specialized care you need to heal fully, not just suppress symptoms. Whether you’re a parent needing support as your child struggles with an eating disorder, or you are struggling with your relationship with food yourself, I’m here to provide a safe space for healing and growth.

I offer a nonjudgmental environment to give you the support you need to begin the courageous exploration of your inner world. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy model is ideally suited for healing from an eating disorder. Rather than staying stuck in the patterns of trying to “control” or eliminate problematic symptoms, we work together to understand why these behaviors started and where they originated from, allowing compassion and curiosity to guide our work.

You can heal the wounds around your body image. You can change your beliefs about your self-worth. If you would like to bring your family in for family counseling, please visit the family counseling services page.

Adult Family Relationship Issues

If you are like me, family is the bedrock of your emotional landscape. Family relationships deeply influence who we become, our emotional health, and the beliefs we develop about who we are in the world as we grow up. I specialize in providing therapeutic services aimed at delving into the multi-faceted and intricate realm of adult family relationships. Whether you’re an adult attempting to navigate the complex bond with your parents or are a parent seeking supportive guidance, I can help. If you would like to bring your family in for family counseling, please visit the family counseling services page.

Whatever you are seeking therapy for,
I strive to create an environment where
you can feel safe, hopeful, and brave.

The Benefits of Individual Therapy

Wondering what some of the benefits of individual therapy are?

For starters, individual therapy offers a confidential and safe environment for you to receive emotional support. I offer a compassionate, non-pathologizing approach so you can feel seen and heard rather than fearful of being judged.

Individual therapy encourages self-exploration and self-awareness. Through our work together, you’ll gain a better understanding of your thoughts, behaviors, and feelings, which can lead you toward personal growth and positive change.

In individual therapy, you’ll also learn problem-solving and coping skills. I’ll teach you stress-management strategies and guide you toward self-confident and assertive behaviors.

Work With Me – IFS Therapy

The human psyche is composed of various parts, all of which are impacted by our life experiences. These experiences can cause us to perceive different parts of ourselves as “good” or “bad” but they are neither — they just are. Are you curious about how this could be true? It may feel hard to simultaneously create space for the idea that you can want to change something about yourself, but also accept it. I can help you with this exploration in individual counseling.

IFS therapy can help you discover, get to know, and accept the various parts of yourself — even the ones you feel are self-destructive or shameful.

I’ve been a licensed clinical psychologist for over 20 years. I’d be honored to walk with you on your healing journey.
